Fill a crossword pattern without the guesswork spiral

Crosswords punish blank staring. You know three letters, you know the length, and the remaining squares feel like fog. This page opens in pattern mode: type the skeleton with ? for unknowns, keep length locked, and read every ENABLE word that fits the mask. It is the same wood-and-felt solver as the rest of the site — just aimed at grids instead of racks.

British and American puzzles both yield to masks. A seven-letter across clue with known ends might look like C?????D. Paste that into Letters, leave Pattern pressed, and the helper walks ENABLE for matches such as CRACKED, CROOKED, CHARGED or CLEANED depending on what you already inked from downs. No account, no mobile app, no clue database that spoils the joy of the cryptic later.

Worked ENABLE examples

Example 1 — five-letter gap. Mask ST??E with length 5. You should see STALE, STONE, STORE, STATE, STYLE and similar five-letter ENABLE entries. Cross-check with a down letter: if position 3 must be O, STORE and STONE survive and STALE leaves.

Example 2 — common ending. Mask ?IGHT. ENABLE returns LIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT, FIGHT, MIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT and EIGHT among others. If a down already forces L in position 1, only LIGHT remains. That is the discipline: let intersecting letters shrink the list instead of hunting synonyms in a vacuum.

Example 3 — longer entry. Mask UN?????LE (nine letters). Keep the length chip on 9 so seven-letter noise never appears. When a down gives B in position 3, unbeatable-shaped ENABLE hits rise and unrelated stems fall away.

Example 4 — short fill. Mask B??K with length 4 yields BOOK, BARK, BEAK, BIKE, BULK and similar ENABLE fours. Add a known O in position 2 for BO?K and BOOK stands out quickly.

Cryptic vs quick crossword

A quick crossword wants a definition match; a cryptic wants wordplay plus definition. This solver does not parse cryptic indicators. It only answers which ENABLE words fit these letters and gaps. Use it after you have a few checked letters from downs, or when the anagram fodder in a cryptic is already clear — in that case the anagram solver or jumble solver may be faster.

British spelling and ENABLE

ENABLE leans toward broad English spellings. COLOUR versus COLOR disputes still happen at the table. If your paper is firmly UK-facing and ENABLE returns only the US form, trust the paper for that grid square and treat this tool as a letter engine, not a style guide. The site chrome itself is written in en-GB because the operator is a UK company — HDK Distribution Ltd — but the word list is the public ENABLE dump, not a bespoke UK crossword lexicon.

Wildcards and blanks

Use up to two ? wildcards when you truly do not know a square. More than that floods the list; better to solve another clue first. Blank tiles in Scrabble are a different job — read blank tiles and use the main unscrambler with question marks in the rack.
