Wordle starting words
Last reviewed 7 October 2026
Wordle is five letters, one a day. The official answer list is not ENABLE. This helper filters our list against the colours you were given. It is not a promise that every New York Times answer is here, or that every ENABLE five is a legal Wordle guess. We are not affiliated with The New York Times.
Pick one opener and keep it
A starter is a habit, not a fresh puzzle each morning. SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, SALET and ADIEU are the openers people already argue about. SLATE and CRANE test common consonants and two vowels. ADIEU spends the first guess on vowels and tells you less about the consonants. There is no single best word. Pick one you will still remember the colour pattern for next week.
Enter what the row actually told you
- Open the Wordle helper, or switch the home tool to Wordle.
- Green means that letter is in that box. Type it in the five green boxes. Do not also drop it into Letters, or you will hunt words that merely contain it.
- Yellow means the letter is in the word and not in that box. Put it in Letters.
- Grey means the letter is out. Put it in Grey letters so it cannot come back. A grey S belongs there, not in a guess you hope will dodge it.
If the second guess still leaves a wide set, add Starts with or Ends with only when a crossing or a later row has made that certain. The five-letter list is there if you want to read candidates without the colour boxes.
When this is the wrong tool
Wordle mode hides anything that is not five letters. If you are holding tiles and order does not matter — a jumble, a Scrabble rack, Text Twist — leave Wordle mode. All words or Anagrams on the main unscrambler is the right search. Pattern mode is for a crossword slot where the known letters already have positions. That is a different job, covered in the pattern guide.
Why starter arguments never end
Information theory fans optimise for average splits across the answer list. Casual players optimise for words they will not mistype at 07:12. Both camps are solving different problems. If you change starter every day, you lose the muscle memory that lets you enter greens and yellows without staring at the keyboard. Pick one opener for a month, then judge it.
Second-guess strategy without a spreadsheet
After the first row, prefer a second guess that tests new common consonants if your opener was vowel-heavy (ADIEU → something like STORK or LYNCH depending on colours). If your opener already spent S T R N and a vowel, use the helper’s candidate list rather than inventing a clever trap word that ignores a green you already earned.
Never put a grey letter back into Letters. Never put a green letter into Letters “just in case” — greens belong in the green boxes so the filter keeps that position fixed.
Hard mode and this helper
Wordle Hard Mode requires you to reuse greens and yellows. The helper does not enforce Hard Mode for you; it only filters ENABLE fives against the colours you typed. If you play Hard Mode, make sure every green you enter stays in the next guess you actually submit to the NYT page.
UK spelling and ENABLE
ENABLE includes many UK spellings and some US ones. The official Wordle answer list is curated by the newspaper and changes over time. Treat helper output as a shortlist, not an oracle. We are based in the United Kingdom and we are not affiliated with The New York Times.
