How to unscramble letters

Last reviewed 7 October 2026

A rack is a bag of letters, not a finished word. This unscrambler lists every ENABLE word those tiles can make, including the shorter leftovers you play when a long word will not fit the board.

The list loaded in your browser is ENABLE, 168,581 public-domain words. The search runs on your device. After that first load, it still works on a bad connection. Nothing you type is sent off as a query.

All words or anagrams

All words keeps every subset. Type LISTEN and ENABLE returns 92 words. Six of them use every letter: silent, listen, enlist, tinsel, inlets and elints. The rest are shorter plays such as isle, tile, sent, in, is and it.

Anagrams keeps only the full-length words. Use that for a newspaper jumble or Text Twist, where the puzzle spends every letter. Stay on All words for Scrabble and Words With Friends. The play is often shorter than the rack.

A turn, in order

  1. Type the tiles. Letters only. A blank is ?, and you can use two. The blank-tile guide explains why that mark means something else in Pattern mode.
  2. Pick the mode. All words for a rack. Anagrams when every letter must be used. Wordle for greens, yellows and greys. Pattern for a crossword slot.
  3. Set the length if the board already tells you. LISTEN filtered to four letters is the fours in that bag — tile, nest, lent, sent, list — not the sixes.
  4. Use starts, ends and must-include for hooks. Ends with S on a stem is how you check a plural before you spend the tile.
  5. Read the score, then the board. Points are English Scrabble face values unless you switch to Words With Friends under More options. Premiums are not added. We cannot see the square.

What this will not do

It will not lay the tiles on a board for you, and it does not use NASPA TWL or Collins CSW. Those lists are copyrighted. ENABLE includes QI and ZA. A club on another book can still disagree on a few words, so check a disputed play in the list you actually play before you challenge.

Which word should you play?

The finder sorts by face value. That number is the sum of the tiles, not the score you will write down. Read the list in three cases: the top word is the right play, the top word cannot be made from the tile set, or a shorter word is the one to keep.

Scores below are English Scrabble values unless a line says Words With Friends. Nothing here adds a premium square.

The number is only the tiles

A E I L N O R S T U are 1, D and G are 2, B C M P are 3, F H V W Y are 4, K is 5, J and X are 8, Q and Z are 10. A blank is 0. The differences are on the Scrabble versus Words With Friends page.

A play that uses all seven tiles scores an extra 50 in Scrabble and an extra 35 in Words With Friends, after the tile sum. The finder does not add that bonus. A bingo that shows 12 on screen is 62 in Scrabble before a double-word square, and 47 in Words With Friends. If you only compare the numbers in the list, a short word with J or X can look better than the seven that wins the game.

L and N are 1 in Scrabble and 2 in Words With Friends. J is 8 here and 10 there. Y is 4 here and 3 there. Switch Score to WWF before you trust the order.

LISTEN, when every letter is worth one

Type LISTEN. ENABLE returns 92 words: 13 of two letters, 25 of three, 32 of four, 16 of five, and 6 that use every tile. Those six are silent, listen, enlist, tinsel, inlets and elints.

Each of the six scores 6 in Scrabble, because every letter is worth 1. In Words With Friends each scores 8, and they are still tied. The sort is not choosing a winner. Play the one that fits. A shorter word on this rack is simply worth its length in Scrabble: a four scores 4.

FIZZY, when the top of the list cannot be played

Type FIZZY. ENABLE returns five words. In Scrabble points:

FIZZY — 29
Needs two Z. A standard English Scrabble set has one.
FIZZ — 25
Also needs two Z. A blank standing in for the second Z scores 0, so the word is 15, not 25.
FIZ — 15
One Z. This is the play if you have no blank.
FY — 8, and IF — 5
Legal, and worse than FIZ unless the board does something the list cannot see.

Spending the blank on FIZZ ties FIZ at 15. You have used the most flexible tile to score the same.

The same trap sits under ordinary words. The face value assumes every copy of the letter is a real tile:

BOOK, COFFEE, ASSESS and QUIZ do fit. QUIZ is 22 from one Q and one Z. QUEUE is 14. Being in the dictionary is not the same as the box containing those tiles.

Counted in the ENABLE file this site loads: 2,628 words need more copies of a letter than that 100-tile English set contains, and 563 of those are seven letters or shorter. 398 are impossible only because they need two or more Z. Words With Friends ships a different set, so do not copy the Scrabble limits across without looking. The finder does not know which box is on your table.

LINEN, when the two games disagree

Type LINEN. ENABLE returns 15 words. Scrabble ranks LINEN at 5, then LIEN, LINE, LINN and NINE in a tie at 4. Words With Friends ranks LINEN at 8, then LINN alone at 7, then LIEN, LINE and NINE at 6. LINN moved up because N is worth 2 there and the word has two of them. Flip the score control before you commit.

QUARTZ, when the top word is real

Type QUARTZ. ENABLE returns 17 words, and the top of the list can be played:

QUARTZ — 24
Six letters. Legal. Not a bingo: a bingo spends seven tiles from the rack.
QUART — 14
Leaves Z and A.
TZAR — 13
Leaves Q and U, still next to each other.
QAT — 12
Leaves Z, U and R. The Q is played and the Z is kept.
QUA — 12
Leaves Z, R and T. Q and U are both played, so the Z is left without a U.
ZA — 11
Leaves Q, U, R and T. You still hold Q beside U, and you have banked the Z.

If QUARTZ fits, 24 is the best face value on the rack. If it does not, the next lines are about the tiles you keep. The finder will not choose that for you.

A way to read any list

  1. Leave the sort on score. A–Z is for hunting a spelling, not for choosing a turn.
  2. Cross off words the set cannot build, unless you will spend a blank, and redo the sum with that blank as 0. English Scrabble limits: one each of J, K, Q, X and Z; two each of B, C, F, H, M, P, V, W and Y; three G; four each of D, L, S and U; six each of N, R and T; eight O; nine each of A and I; twelve E; two blanks.
  3. Add the bingo in your head if a seven-letter word fits. That is 50 in Scrabble and 35 in Words With Friends, and it is not on the screen.
  4. Read what you would keep. All vowels, or a pile of the same awkward consonant, is a reason to try the next line. S is the second most common letter inside ENABLE words, about 9.5% of every letter in the list, behind only E at about 11.5%. The English set has four S tiles. The two-letter list is how you spend one awkward tile without emptying the rack.
  5. Look at the board last. Set the length if the opening is a known size. Use Ends with to check a hook. If the job is a crossword slot rather than a rack, use Pattern: there, ? is an empty square, not a blank. The pattern guide and the blank-tile guide are the two meanings.

This will not lay the tiles down, and it does not know the other rack or the bonus squares. If the word decides a challenge, check Collins or NASPA — those books are copyrighted, and this site does not copy them. For a stem you are learning, use bingo stems.

Updated . Counts are from the ENABLE file this site serves, 168,581 words.

FAQ

Why is the highest scoring word sometimes unplayable?

The finder checks the ENABLE spelling list, not the tiles in the box. FIZZY scores 29 and FIZZ scores 25, but a standard English Scrabble set has one Z and both words need two. With no blank, the play is FIZ at 15. A blank scores 0, so FIZZ with a blank is also 15.

Does the score include the bingo bonus?

No. Add 50 yourself in Scrabble, or 35 in Words With Friends, when the play uses all seven tiles. Premium squares are not included.

Why did the order change when I switched to Words With Friends?

Some letters have different values. On LINEN, Scrabble ties LIEN, LINE, LINN and NINE at 4, behind LINEN at 5. Words With Friends ranks LINN alone in second at 7, because N is worth 2 there.

How should I choose when several words fit?

Cross off words the tile set cannot make, add the bingo bonus in your head if a seven-tile word fits, then look at the tiles you would keep. The board comes last.
