Scrabble vs Words With Friends

Last reviewed 7 October 2026

Same rack, different points. This site can score either table. It always checks ENABLE, not the official word list of either game.

English Scrabble face values

This is the default. 1 — A E I L N O R S T U. 2 — D G. 3 — B C M P. 4 — F H V W Y. 5 — K. 8 — J X. 10 — Q Z. A blank is 0.

Words With Friends face values

Switch Score to WWF under More options. 1 — A E I O R S T. 2 — D L N U. 3 — G H Y. 4 — B C F M P W. 5 — K V. 8 — X. 10 — J Q Z. A blank is 0.

The letters that change a close decision are the ones that moved. L and N are 1 in Scrabble and 2 in Words With Friends, so a dump such as IN or ON is worth more in the app. J is 8 in Scrabble and 10 in Words With Friends. Y is 4 in Scrabble and 3 in Words With Friends. A word that ranks first on the Scrabble table can rank second once you flip the toggle. Flip it before you trust the order.

Neither table adds a double-word square, a triple-letter square, or the 50-point bingo for using all seven tiles. Those depend on the board. The number here is the sum of the tiles, so you can rank the rack. You still have to look at the square.

The lists are not the same either

Scores and dictionaries are separate problems. ENABLE is the public-domain list this site uses, about 168,000 words, including QI, ZA, JO and XI. North American tournament Scrabble uses NASPA TWL. UK and international tournament play uses Collins CSW. Both of those books are copyrighted, so we do not copy them.

Casual games are usually close enough. A rated game is not. If the word is the one that wins the argument, check it in the book your club actually uses before you challenge. The two-letter list is the ENABLE set: 124 words. QI and ZA are the 11-point Scrabble plays, with no blank.

Side-by-side examples

Take the rack word JUNKY. Scrabble face value: J8 + U1 + N1 + K5 + Y4 = 19. Words With Friends: J10 + U2 + N2 + K5 + Y3 = 22. The same five tiles jump three points before any premium square. That is why the Score toggle exists — not because one game is “harder”, but because the printers of the tiles disagreed.

Take QI. Both games score Q at 10 and I at 1 for 11 with no blank. The fight is rarely the face value; it is whether QI is allowed in the book on the table. ENABLE includes it. Your club book might too. Confirm before you challenge.

Bingo and premium squares

Using all seven tiles (a bingo / bonus) is +50 in Scrabble and +35 in Words With Friends under common app rules — and this site does not add either bonus automatically, because it cannot see whether you emptied the rack on that turn. Double-word and triple-letter squares are likewise board-dependent. Use the ranked list to pick a candidate, then score the placement on your board or in the app.

Dictionary mismatch in practice

ENABLE is close enough for kitchen-table games and for learning stems. It is not a substitute for NASPA TWL or Collins CSW in a rated club. If two players argue, the house rule wins: phone ENABLE, paper TWL, or club CSW. We will not pretend otherwise, and we will not ship a pirated tournament list.

Useful ENABLE study pages on this site: two-letter words, JQXZ words, Q without U, and bingo stems.

App settings checklist

  1. Set Score to Scrabble or WWF to match the game open on your phone.
  2. Use Anagrams when every tile must be spent; All words when shorter dumps are legal.
  3. Remember blanks are ? and still score zero — see the blank tiles guide.
  4. Do not paste a whole board into the letter box. This is a rack and pattern tool, not a board OCR.
