Is it a word?

Type a candidate. This page answers is it a word? against ENABLE (~168,000 words) in the browser. Same engine as the word checker — this URL is the question people actually search.

Try QI, XYZZY or LISTEN. ENABLE is not TWL or Collins, so tournament legality can differ.

Check a word against ENABLE before you challenge

Kitchen-table arguments burn hotter than the tea. Someone plays QI, someone else swears it is slang, and the paper dictionary is in another room. This page answers a narrow question: is the string in the ENABLE list we ship with the unscrambler? Type the word, press Find words, and read a clear yes-shaped result or an empty list. No account. No crowd-sourced chat.

ENABLE is public-domain English with on the order of 168,000 entries. It includes many tournament-useful shorts (QI, ZA, JO, XI) and ordinary study spellings. It is not NASPA’s TWL and not Collins CSW. If your club swore an oath to a copyrighted book, believe the book — this tool is for casual checks and study, not for overturning a rated-game ruling.

Worked ENABLE examples

QI — accepted here. The two-letter Scrabble staple meaning life force in pinyin-aware lists. Try it beside 2-letter words.

ZA — accepted here as the informal pizza clip common in North American short-word study. Same list page as above.

EUOUAE — a famous musical vowel string; whether it appears depends on ENABLE membership. If the helper returns nothing, do not bluff it at a club that uses a different book.

LISTEN — accepted, and its anagrams SILENT, ENLIST, INLETS, TINSEL, ELINTS are accepted too. See /unscramble/listen for the HTML list.

SCRABBLE as a rack — the word SCRABBLE itself and many subsets; start from /unscramble/scrabble or the main unscrambler.

Made-up brands and texting slang — usually absent unless they entered broad English lists. “LOL” as a verb may disappoint you; that is a feature, not a bug, for board-game honesty.

How to use it mid-game

When a doubtful word hits the board, type it here before tempers rise. If ENABLE has it, you still may need house rules. If ENABLE lacks it, you have a calm data point. For “what else can I play?” switch to subset mode on the homepage rather than arguing about a single string.

Teachers building worksheets can verify that a scramble’s answer is unique: paste the answer here, then build the puzzle on a jumble workflow via the jumble solver.

Ads and privacy

The check runs locally after ENABLE loads. Ads, when shown, appear under the tool only. We do not sell word lookups and we do not keep a history of the strings you type on our servers.

More ENABLE spot-checks

JO, XI, XU, ZA, QI — short power plays many casual players debate. Confirm them here, then browse 2-letter words for the wider set this site documents from ENABLE.

HYPHENATED or punctuated strings — type letters only. The solver is an A–Z engine; hyphens and apostrophes are stripped from useful checks. O’CLOCK-style entries are not what this box is for.

US vs UK spelling — COLOR / COLOUR style splits may disagree with your paper. ENABLE’s membership is the rule on this site; your style guide remains the rule for publishing copy.

Teaching use

Have students propose a word, check it here, then unscramble its letters on the homepage to see neighbours. That loop teaches morphology without needing a paid app. Keep worksheets to a handful of rich examples rather than generating endless doorway pages.

Operator note

lettersunscrambler.com is run by HDK Distribution Ltd in the United Kingdom. Editorial standard for this checker: describe ENABLE honestly, never pretend we licensed TWL or CSW, and never invent “acceptance rates” or traffic statistics.

FAQ

Is ENABLE the same as the Words With Friends in-app list?

No. It is close for casual play, not identical.

Why did a common name fail?

Many proper nouns are absent from ENABLE. That keeps the list nearer to common nouns and verbs.

Can I check several words at once?

Check one string here. For several scrambled tokens, use the jumble-oriented tools linked from the footer.

Does a hit mean I will win a challenge?

Only if your table agreed to ENABLE. Rated clubs use their own books.
